Interpretation is oral and, just like translation, is fundamentally the art of paraphrasing. The two main modes of interpretation are consecutive and simultaneous. Consecutive interpreting is used in business negotiations and on factory tours. Each speaker pauses after a few sentences to allow the interpreter to render the speech into the other language. Simultaneous interpreting is used in group situations where only one or two people are unable to communicate. The interpreter sits behind the listeners and whispers to them, allowing them to follow discussions. This can also involve a microphone and headset and be conducted remotely. Because simultaneous interpreting requires immense concentration, interpreters usually work in pairs, relieving each other at 15- to 30-minute intervals. Expert knowledge of the subject matter is equally as important as the interpreting experience.
